Reunion With a Killer

Lee Bishop, a hardware sales rep, decides to make his last cross country sales trip by car instead of flying as usual.  One of his main reasons was to take the opportunity to stop in the town in

Iowa

where he went to college, both to see the school again, and especially to visit with his college roommate who is the president of the bank there and with whom he had been corresponding through yearly Christmas cards for several years.  When he arrives in town, he calls his old friend, Carl Kyle, to set up a meeting but is told by Kyle that he must leave town on business and that they won’t be able to see him.  At first disappointed, Lee decides to drop in at the bank anyway for a quick hello, and when directed to Kyle’s office sees a man who is a complete stranger to him.  He leaves the bank in confusion without talking to “Kyle”.

Lee discovers that while the man at the bank is obviously not his old friend, he is accepted by the townsfolk as the man who was once Lee’s roommate at the local college.  About ready to leave town and the perplexing puzzle behind him, Lee discovers that the editor of the local newspaper is Pete Riley, another old friend from college and enlists him to help discover the mystery behind who the president of the bank is.

Lee’s and Pete’s investigation uncover much more than who the current Carl Kyle is.  Confronting the bank president somewhat indirectly puts their lives in jeopardy, and leads the reader to a suspenseful conclusion.
